Maine Root Handcrafted Beverages

Maine Root on the Main Line

We fell in love with Maine Root beverages the moment we tasted them. Maine Root started six years ago on the waterfront of Portland, Maine.  Unlike most soft drinks, Maine Root’s focus is on flavor and environmental responsibility throughout their creation process.

All of their products are Gluten-Free, Fair Trade Certified, using nothing but the best Organic Evaporated Cane Juices, which just tastes better.

We spoke with Mark Seiler from Maine Root and asked him a few questions about our favorite craft soda company.

Your story is very interesting, when you started the company with your brother did you foresee the company growing to where it stands today?

Matt started Maine Root , I was not involved with the initial creation.  I can’t explain how we knew, but we knew we could get to where we are today, it just took a few years.

How many employees does Maine Root have today?

Being Fair Trade Certified Organically sweetened is clearly a priority for Maine Root. Why did you decide to make this such a crucial part of your brand?

Organic keeps the petro chemical pesticides, round up, and GMO out. These are good things for the water quality, and the workers who handle the crops.  Fair Trade keeps the farmers whole, they get a fair price, plus a premium , which is spent on farm equipment, schools,  and medical care.  All of this doesn’t matter unless someone cares about it as much as we do.  The rubber hits the road when a grocer buyer or restaurant owner decides this matters and is willing to bet it matters to their customers who will spend a little more to make a difference to the farmers and the environment, and their own health .

Do you feel that the popularity with craft beer will positively impact craft soda?

Yes, it already has.  The craft beer category has helped give consumers an easy way to think about small craft soda brands and where they fit.  The biggest soda brands in the world are trying to look small by launching their version of craft soda.

What is the hardest part of the soda creation process?

The hardest thing is scaling the flavor consistency from a lobster pot sized batch to a baby blue whale sized batch.  The math seems easy, but the taste doesn’t pay attention to math.

What is your personal favorite flavor?

Blueberry is my favorite this week.

Maine Root has some unique flavors not typically seen in soda. Who creates the flavor concepts?

The flavors are created by customer feed back, and eating and drinking all over the place all the time.

Any experimental flavors in the works?

Yes, we’re always experimenting at our flavor pump incubator. Stay tuned.
